Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 24, 2026
SpeekTalk ("we", "our", or "the Extension") is a browser extension that allows users to leave comments on any web page. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following information when you use SpeekTalk:
- Account Information — When you sign in via Google OAuth, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from your Google account. When you sign in via SMS, we collect your phone number.
- User-Generated Content — Comments you post, including text content and any @mentions.
- Page URL — The URL of the web page you are viewing, used solely to associate comments with the correct page topic.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To authenticate your identity and maintain your session.
- To display your name and avatar alongside your comments.
- To resolve the current page URL into a topic for comment grouping.
- To send you notifications when someone replies to or likes your comment.
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not read or collect page content, browsing history, or any data from the web pages you visit beyond the URL.
- We do not track your browsing behavior across websites.
- We do not collect financial or payment information.
- We do not use cookies for advertising or analytics.
4. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on our servers and in a MongoDB database. We use JWT-based authentication to secure API communication. All user passwords are never stored as we rely on third-party authentication (Google OAuth and SMS verification).
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or transfer your personal information to third parties. Your data is only used to provide the SpeekTalk commenting service. Comments you post are visible to other users of the Extension on the same page.
6. Permissions Explained
- activeTab — Used to read the URL of the current tab so we can load and display the correct comment thread for that page.
- identity — Used to authenticate users via Google OAuth (chrome.identity API) for secure sign-in.
- storage — Used to store your authentication token and user preferences (such as panel position and font size) locally in the browser.
7. Your Rights
You may:
- Delete your comments at any time from within the Extension.
- Request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us.
- Uninstall the Extension at any time to stop all data collection.
8. Children's Privacy
SpeekTalk is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
